Bavarian shore
Lindau on Lake Constance
My home. An island in the lake, a harbour with a lion and a lighthouse — and an evening light that stays soft over the water for a long time.
The island, the harbour, the evening light · Best time: Late afternoons from May to September, blue hour at the harbour

The place
Lindau is an old town on an island: narrow lanes with tall façades, and then suddenly the open lake. That contrast is what makes the place so rewarding to photograph. In the lanes the light is narrow and directional; at the harbour everything opens up. Anyone marrying here has two entirely different visual worlds within walking distance.
The light
The harbour faces south. In the morning the light stands hard above the entrance; in the late afternoon it lies flat across the water and the pier. The final hour before sunset is its own currency at Lake Constance — the water throws back a light you won't find inland.

Practical
The island is busy on summer weekends. For quiet frames the early hour or the evening pays off, once the day visitors have left. Distances are short; changing location rarely costs more than ten minutes, which is kind to the schedule.
